Peking Duck Delight

2020-04-30T10:50:31+01:00

The art of roasting duck has been in practice since Imperial times of the dynastic eras in China. Traditionally, the delectable Peking duck is served on most auspicious of occasions. The ceremonial aspect of slicing the crispy outer layer of the roast at the dinner table in front of guests is what makes a great presentation when ordering this dish. Apart from the duck itself, the trimmings are just as important. Finely sliced or julienned vegetables like cucumber and radish are wrapped delicately into a homemade pancake, and a dip into the hoisin sauce makes a heavenly mouthful  -in olden times, [...]

Chilli Oil

2020-04-30T10:50:31+01:00

As many of you know, our chilli oil is made in house by our chefs at Naturally Chinese. In Chinese or Asian cuisine, chilli oil is an important condiment. In China, it is used abundantly in the Sichuan and Hunan regions, as the food in these areas tends to lean on the spicier side of Chinese cuisine. It is also interesting to note that the region in southern Italy also makes their own version of a chill oil which is used to accompany many of their dishes, even on pizza! If you like spice then this chilli oil will put a [...]

Life in food

2020-04-30T10:50:31+01:00

Following on from last week's post on the mindfulness of eating --how alive is our food and why it is beneficial to eat living foods, grown from the ground? In a time where we don't always know where our food comes from, and we have to grapple with having to keep up with changes in food sourcing and sustainability, seeking a quality of life in food is and should become an important part of our everyday thinking. Sustainable food sourcing can be highly rewarding to everyone on many levels. In a restaurant where ingredients need to be carefully supervised for quality, [...]

Mindfulness of eating

2020-04-30T10:50:32+01:00

When we think about food and eating in the age we live in, two factors come into play: what are the choices of food we have to eat, and secondly, how do we obtain them as quickly as possible. Many times the stress of life takes over our better judgement and we can forget to take time to indulge in the therapeutic value and mindfulness of eating. It's a concept that is talked about now for some time: Mindfulness. A way to slow down from the rat race of life and stop to smell the roses. It's a way to pay [...]

Soft-Shell Crab

2020-04-30T10:50:32+01:00

Many countries around the world create this dish in their own unique way. Our deep fried soft-shell crab on the menu may be a bit of a surprise to some, but it is very popular in Asian cuisine. Soft-shell crab has different varieties of course, depending on the place and the kind of crab that is local to the region. But one thing is true, and that the taste and texture of a soft-shell crab no matter how it is prepared is one to delight in and never be forgotten. The trick to getting it right is to work fast and [...]

Chicken in Wine

2020-04-30T10:50:32+01:00

This is our version of a Coq-au-vin, prepared with essentially Chinese herbs and wine. What makes it distinctive to the Chinese version of the dish is the wine - fermented rice wine known as Saoxing wine. It is sweet, almost like a sherry which gives a mild marinade to the chicken. Unlike its French counterpart, this dish uses more spice than herb, sometimes flavouring it with a bark of cinnamon but mostly star anise which is signature to asian cooking. Mushrooms are used as a matter of choice but never overpowering the taste of chicken which is the main highlight of the dish. [...]

The lightness of greens

2020-04-30T10:50:48+01:00

A big part of our cuisine uses the colour green. The leafy logo that is part of our identity denotes our partiality to green leafy vegetables in all our meal combinations. It has and remains an important component of the diet. The lightness of greens, in addition to its aesthetic appeal, is beneficial to counterbalance other foods. Our favourite and incidentally most popular is a detox mixed vegetable and a green beans side dish.  In a good sized portion that can be enjoyed even by one person alone, it is cooked in a garlic or chilli bean sauce. Singed on the outside and [...]

Culinary Insights

2020-04-30T10:50:48+01:00

It was about two years after opening the restaurant that magazine publications, bloggers and other culinary connoisseurs began to take notice of what Naturally Chinese had to offer. We had a great review in Stylist magazine back in 2015 that featured in the top  UK bars and restaurants for  healthy eating. It was a fulfilling task to bring Naturally Chinese into the culinary insights of foodies that were looking for a more healthy approach to Chinese cuisine. Chinese cuisine traditionally has always maintained a healthy approach to food. It was perhaps the advent of fast food -adding MSG and other additives [...]

Naturally Chinese

2020-04-30T10:50:49+01:00

What makes the essence of Chinese cuisine is what is diverse about it. Chinese cooking can be said to be one of the most complex even if turned out from a wok in a matter of minutes. China has many regions and within it lies a variety in styles of cooking. Some of these we incorporate into the dishes at Naturally Chinese. Some of them have been devised by our chefs placing their own spin to make them unique. However, still keeping with the original ingredients and methods making it naturally Chinese. China houses eight dominant regions of cuisine. These are [...]
