Lemon Chicken

2020-04-30T10:53:54+01:00

There are a dozen or more ways to make a lemon chicken. It's the dish I'd like to say has creative license and you might also find that various Chinese restaurants have their own variation. It may be stir fried, deep fried, glazed in lemon sauce. Even lemon sauces come in several variations. Our chef makes it like this. If you're a fan of KFC style chicken, wait till you get your hands on these slim nuggets. Juicy chicken breasts with a crispy golden batter - all cooked from scratch and fresh off the pan. It doesn't finish there. It has a [...]

Something Sweet

2020-04-30T10:53:54+01:00

It isn't typical perhaps of Chinese restaurants to house great desserts. Unlike French restaurants that are expected to have a range of desserts and pastries, it is not usually top priority on the menu for Chinese restaurants. At Naturally Chinese we have a small but delicious dessert menu. We don't have the fancy ones to boast of but the few that we have complement our dishes. Simple as they are, they pack a bundle of sweet satisfaction. Here are three best choices in no particular order, and all so different. Our show-stopping Chocolate Molten Lava cake will impress you as it makes [...]

Rice Please

2020-04-30T10:53:54+01:00

It's a cool early morning. The smell of rice fields and the sight of green steps cascading over the mountain bring comfort and relaxation. I'm spending my last day in Vietnam before I head to China. All I crave for is a bowl of steamed rice. The taste is unique on its own. No gravies to accompany, just the wholesome goodness of this essential staple food of the Far East. My friend for many years asks me how I can eat just rice alone. Maybe it's habitual, maybe it's nostalgia. Food is more than just taste, it is the experience that makes you think [...]

Comfort Soup

2020-04-30T10:53:54+01:00

This soup boasts of its bright colour and high protein content. An instant reviver on those days of fatigue and physical work, this dish could very well make a fine healing food as it is fortified to nourish. The Chinese mustard greens with salted egg and pork has been a favourite of mine for years. At the restaurant, it is listed on our menu as a soup to share for two, although if you may have a big appetite, it might suffice for yourself alone. The recipe comes together with the right mix of flavours: marinated pork and ginger, salted egg balanced by the [...]

Steamed Sea Bass

2020-04-30T10:53:55+01:00

This beautiful slender fish makes a grand addition to any celebration. Steaming the sea bass and finishing it off with zesty ginger and spring onions keeps it true to it's Cantonese style. These ingredients are there to reaffirm the delicate flavour of the fish. At Naturally Chinese, the sea bass is a popular dish on our menu all year round. What makes it worth the experience is the freshness of the fish. The chef has to make sure it is never over cooked as the soft fleshiness is key to its success. The sizzling hot fish that comes out of the [...]

Nature Farming

2020-04-30T10:53:55+01:00

Say hello to these beauties - summer fruit that is beginning to sprout in our garden. It was an experiment using techniques of 'nature farming' as it is known. The concept was formed in Japan by Mokichi Okada -founding an agricultural system without the use of fertilizers. I've been trying to adopt this method in my gardening. The process is highly organic. It begins with trying to clear the soil of pollutants, not using tilling machines but the use of micro-organisms that can better purify the soil. Absolutely no chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides are used. On a more holistic level, the idea [...]

Chinese Scallops and Broccoli

2020-04-30T10:53:55+01:00

We've voted Scallops to be our number one favourite seafood dish for Summer. Diced garlic, ginger and a dash of rice wine enhance the flavours of those tempting bay scallops. The succulent juices are what give this dish its character. In the photo you see here, we've presented a mix of scallops and shrimp, decked with spring onions, broccoli florets, carrot and Chinese mushroom. It's a variation on what is the traditional Chinese Scallops and Broccoli. This goes best with a chilled Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc. And if you'd rather have something soft and chilled, try our sparkling elderflower! Scallops are [...]

Father’s Day

2020-04-30T10:53:55+01:00

It's a week till Father's Day. Yes, it's that time of year again where our dads get to take center stage. Fifty years ago, Father's Day might have been overlooked by many, but today it becomes more important. It has been reassuring to see these days that fathers are putting more effort into parenting, and not just leaving it as the job of the mother. Boys and girls also need a strong but kind father figure in their development. Societies benefit greatly from this, on many levels. Being a father is a gift of an opportunity. Hopefully, we will celebrate that more. [...]
